What is an AI agent? A clear explanation, with examples (2026)

An AI agent doesn't just answer: it acts. It uses a computer, tools and a memory to finish a task on its own, even while you're away. What that means, how it works, how it differs from a chatbot, and what it can do for you today.

"AI agent" is the most used tech term of 2026. In the US alone, "agentic AI" draws over 100,000 searches a month, and searches for "autonomous AI agents" grew more than sevenfold in a year. Yet most explanations are either vague ("an AI that acts") or buried in jargon. Here is a plain one.

The one-sentence definition

An AI agent is an AI that can take actions toward a goal, on its own, using tools, and that keeps going until the job is done.

A chatbot gives you an answer. An agent gives you a result: the email sorted, the report written and saved, the website published, the price checked every morning.

Chatbot vs AI agent

ChatbotAI agent
What you getA replyA finished task
How it worksOne question, one answerA loop: plan, act, check, repeat
ToolsUsually none, or a few pluginsBrowser, terminal, files, email, apps
When it worksOnly while you chatAlso when you're away, on a schedule or on an event
MemoryThe current conversationLong-term memory, files, history
RiskIt says something wrongIt does something wrong, so it needs safeguards

A good test: if the AI stops working the moment you close the window, it's a chatbot. If it keeps going and comes back with a result, it's an agent.

How an AI agent works

Under the hood, every agent runs the same loop:

  1. Understand the goal. "Every Monday, gather our competitors' prices and send me a summary."
  2. Plan. Which sites to visit, what to extract, where to save it.
  3. Act with tools. Open a browser, read pages, run code, write a file, send an email.
  4. Check the result. Did it work? Is a page blocked? Does it need to try another way?
  5. Repeat until the goal is reached, then report back.

The "brain" is a large language model (Claude, GPT, Gemini, Mistral…). The "hands" are the tools. The difference between a toy and a useful agent is mostly in the hands, and in the place where the agent works.

Why the best agents have their own computer

In 2026, the agents that do real work give the AI its own computer: a machine with a browser, a terminal and storage, running in the cloud. Doing so solves three problems at once:

  • It works 24/7. Your laptop can sleep. The agent's computer doesn't.
  • It's isolated. If the agent makes a mistake, it happens on its machine, not on yours. Security researchers now recommend exactly this setup.
  • It remembers. Files, logins and notes stay between tasks, instead of starting from zero every time.

That's the approach of OpenAI Dots, Grok Bot, Meta Muse and Baguette Bot. Self-hosted agents such as Hermes Agent or OpenClaw do the same, on a server you run yourself.

What can an AI agent do for you today?

Concrete examples that work well in 2026:

  • Email: sort your inbox every morning, draft replies, flag what's urgent. See AI agents for email.
  • Monitoring: watch a web page, a price or a competitor, and alert you or act when it changes. See monitoring websites with an AI agent.
  • Research and reports: compile information from dozens of sites into a clean document.
  • Code and websites: write scripts, fix bugs, build and publish a small website.
  • Routines: a morning briefing, a weekly report, a monthly invoice reminder. See automating tasks with AI.
  • Admin chores: fill in forms, rename and file documents, keep a spreadsheet up to date.

What an AI agent still does badly

Honesty matters here, because agents act:

  • Some websites block them. CAPTCHAs, bot checks and logins still trip agents up, and most products let you take over in those moments.
  • They can misunderstand. A vague instruction can produce a confident wrong result. Good agents ask before sending, paying or deleting.
  • Prompt injection. A malicious page can try to give the agent instructions. That's why approvals for sensitive actions matter.
  • Costs can add up. Long tasks consume a lot of model usage. Look for clear limits and spending caps.

Is an AI agent safe?

It can be, if the product is designed for it. Before trusting an agent with your accounts, check five things:

  1. Does it ask before sensitive actions (sending, buying, deleting)?
  2. Are your passwords hidden from the AI?
  3. Does it work on an isolated machine rather than directly on your computer?
  4. Can you see what it did, and ideally undo it?
  5. Where does your data live, and under which law? Our sovereignty guide explains why this matters in Europe.

How Baguette Bot does it

Baguette Bot gives each account its own Linux computer in the cloud, hosted in Paris.

  • Several bots. You create as many as your plan allows (6 on the free plan), each with its own job and the model of your choice among more than 400.
  • Watch and take over. You can see their screen live and take control at any time. A snapshot is taken before each mission, so you can undo what a bot did on its computer.
  • Safe defaults. Sensitive actions wait for your approval, and secrets are encrypted and never shown to the model.
  • Routines and watchers. Bots run scheduled tasks and react to changes on pages, prices or emails.
  • Everywhere. You talk to them on the web, on Mac, Linux, Android or iPhone (beta), or by Telegram, WhatsApp and email.
  • Yours to keep. You can export your bots to an open .bot file.

FAQ

Is ChatGPT an AI agent? ChatGPT on its own is a chatbot. OpenAI's agents now live in ChatGPT as "dots", which are not available on personal plans in the EU. See Baguette Bot vs OpenAI Dots.

What is "agentic AI"? It's the general term for AI systems that act autonomously toward goals. An AI agent is one concrete product of agentic AI.

Do I need to code to use an AI agent? No. Hosted agents work through plain-language instructions. Self-hosted agents usually require technical skills.

Is there a free AI agent? Yes, with limits. See what a free AI agent really gives you.
